Preparing for Buffalo's Winter Starts in July

By the middle of summer, most Buffalonians are thinking about backyard barbecues, trips to Lake Erie, and enjoying warm weather while it lasts. Winter may seem far away, but environmental experts know that July is one of the best times to prepare for the challenges that arrive each year across Western New York.

Buffalo is famous for snow, but snowfall is only one part of the region's winter weather risks. Extreme cold, ice accumulation, flooding from snowmelt, falling tree limbs, power outages, and transportation disruptions often create greater impacts than snowfall alone.

The December 2022 blizzard demonstrated how quickly winter conditions can become dangerous. High winds, blowing snow, and freezing temperatures stranded motorists, disrupted emergency services, and left many residents without access to essential supplies. While no one can prevent severe weather, preparation months before winter arrives helps reduce risks.

One reason Buffalo remains vulnerable to major snow events is its location along Lake Erie. Many people assume climate change means less snow, but scientists have found the relationship is more complicated. Warmer lake temperatures keep portions of the Great Lakes ice-free longer into winter. Open water releases moisture into the atmosphere, providing fuel for lake-effect snowstorms. Research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has shown that warming lake temperatures can contribute to heavier snowfall events in portions of the Great Lakes region.

Summer is also the ideal time to inspect trees. Trees weakened by disease, insect damage, drought stress, or age often fail during winter storms when snow and ice accumulate on branches. A single falling limb can damage roofs, vehicles, power lines, and homes. Property owners should look for dead branches, cracks in trunks, fungal growth, or leaning trees. Addressing these issues in July is often easier and less expensive than dealing with storm damage during winter.

Drainage is another overlooked aspect of winter preparedness. Buffalo receives roughly 40 inches of annual precipitation, in addition to significant snowfall. During winter thaws, melting snow combines with rain to create localized flooding. Summer thunderstorms provide an opportunity to identify areas where water pools around foundations, sidewalks, and driveways. Extending downspouts, cleaning gutters, maintaining vegetation, and installing rain gardens can help reduce future flooding and ice hazards.

Home energy efficiency should also be addressed before temperatures drop. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, air leaks around windows, doors, and foundations account for substantial heat loss in many homes. Sealing gaps, adding insulation, and servicing heating systems during summer can lower winter energy costs while reducing overall energy consumption.

Environmental preparedness extends beyond homes. Native plants established during summer provide important benefits for wildlife during winter. Species such as goldenrod, black-eyed Susan, coneflower, and native grasses produce seeds that support birds and other wildlife when food becomes scarce. Their root systems also help stabilize soil and improve stormwater absorption throughout the year.

Residents should also prepare for power outages before seasonal demand increases. Emergency kits should include water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, medications, blankets, and portable charging devices. Waiting until a major winter storm is forecast often means competing with thousands of other residents for limited supplies.

A practical July checklist includes inspecting roofs, cleaning gutters, trimming hazardous branches, testing sump pumps, sealing air leaks, checking carbon monoxide detectors, reviewing insurance coverage, and restocking emergency supplies.

Winter preparedness is often viewed as a task for October or November. In reality, many of the most effective actions begin during the summer months. By preparing in July, Buffalo residents can reduce property damage, lower energy costs, protect local wildlife, and improve their resilience before the first lake-effect snow bands arrive.
